113008 -- Part 9: "Disciples Love" - 1 Corinthians 13:1-8
(1 downloads)Download this episode (39 min)
Love is an objective thing for Christians. It has less to do with positive feelings or subjective emotions and much to do with behaviors that seek to bring God's best to other people. The Apostle Paul states that "loving" is the best way to describe Jesus Christ, and that is why disciples of Jesus choose to love. People who desire to follow Jesus need to think hard about how much they love.

Sunday, Nov 23, 2008112308 -- Part 8: "Disciples Pray" - Psalm 1

Most Christians know about prayer. Isn't it just "talking to God'? We ask God for help. We tell God we're thankful. We confess our sins. We praise God for who He is. We cry out to Him for understanding and request His intervention into our concerns.
Prayer is one of the practices that mark disciples of Jesus. But what if prayer is more than "talking to God"? What if the practice of prayer has as much to do with listening, reflecting and meditating as it does with our speech?
This Sunday we will look at Psalm 1 and discuss a process for prayer that transforms our hearts. Join us!

Please join us this Sunday as we explore the topic of giving and how we can pursue this responsibly as a church family.

Christians forgive--repeatedly, willingly and unconditionally--those who ask for forgiveness. We forgive because we have received forgiveness on such a grand scale. Our hearts have been humbled, and we could never refuse to forgive what is minor in comparison.
But what about truth, justice and helping hurtful people grow? Are we to always forgive but never confront? Next Sunday we will find that disciples not only confess, they also confront and make amends.

Many religious leaders, philosophers and humanists lift up forgiveness as a virtuous ideal. Jesus also teaches his followers to forgive others, but Christian forgiveness is distinctive. It is much more than mere self-liberation.
Christian forgiveness rests on the fact that someone always pays the debt created by an offense. In Christianity, justice always accompanies forgiveness.

Part 4: "Disciples Serve" - John 13:1-20
Disciple of Jesus Christ Series
Jesus had trouble reaching his disciples' hearts and we would give him the same trouble today. It's hard enough to understand what motivates us at our core, but it's even harder to adjust our base motivational drives or replace them with new ones.
As human beings, we easily cover up the fact that we are deeply motivated to satisfy our own desires and pursue what will bring us the most benefit. Yet the "Jesus model" is self-sacrificing service motivated by love for the Father and for humanity. Jesus said, "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This Sunday we will study Jesus' model of service and hope to apply it to our hearts and then to our lives.
